Gowhar Jabeen

In the picturesque region of Anantnag, South Kashmir, a young woman is redefining agriculture. Gowhar Jabeen, affectionately known as the ‘Kivi Girl,’ has established a thriving kiwi fruit nursery in her hometown. Balancing her academic pursuits with entrepreneurial ambitions, she is making significant strides in a field traditionally dominated by men.

Academic Background: M.Sc Student with a Vision

Gowhar Jabeen is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Agricultural Economics at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Kashmir. Her academic journey has equipped her with the knowledge and skills necessary to venture into the agricultural sector, particularly in fruit cultivation.

The Birth of the Kiwi Nursery

The idea of establishing a kiwi nursery was born out of necessity and opportunity. Facing financial constraints, Gowhar sought a sustainable livelihood that would not only support her but also contribute to her community. Recognizing the favorable climatic conditions of Kashmir for kiwi cultivation, she embarked on setting up a nursery specializing in the Hayward variety of kiwi.

The Hayward kiwi, known for its superior taste and texture, has been successfully cultivated in the region, thanks to initiatives by SKUAST and pioneering farmers like the late Bashir Ahmed War from Sopore.

The Nursery in Action

Gowhar’s nursery, located in Ashajipora village, currently houses over 300 pairs of male and female kiwi plants. These plants are meticulously cared for in a polyhouse environment, ensuring optimal growth conditions. The nursery has garnered attention from local farmers and horticulturists, with many seeking to purchase plants for their own cultivation.
