After completing his MBBS from a reputed medical college, Dr. Iqbal specialized further by completing his MD in Pediatrics. His quest for excellence and passion for addressing critical health challenges in children led him to pursue an FNB (Fellowship of the National Board) in Pediatric Hemato-Oncology. This specialization focuses on diagnosing and treating blood disorders and cancers in children, a highly demanding and specialized field that requires both skill and empathy.
Joining GMC Baramulla
In 2018, Dr. Waseem Iqbal joined Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. At that time, GMC Baramulla was already one of the key medical institutions in North Kashmir, but its pediatric services faced challenges related to infrastructure and access to specialized care.
Dr. Iqbal quickly became a pillar of strength in the institution. His clinical expertise, combined with his strong leadership and academic knowledge, allowed him to bring significant improvements to the pediatric care landscape in the region.
Transforming Pediatric Care in North Kashmir
One of Dr. Iqbal’s most notable achievements at GMC Baramulla has been his contribution to developing an advanced pediatric care infrastructure. Under his leadership, the department established a fully functional Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), which offers critical care services for newborns in need. Furthermore, recognizing the urgent need for advanced neonatal care in the region, Dr. Iqbal played a pivotal role in the ongoing development of a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This high-level NICU is designed to provide comprehensive care for the most vulnerable infants, with specialized equipment and trained staff.
Beyond neonatal care, Dr. Iqbal initiated the establishment of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a High Dependency Unit (HDU). These units are crucial for the treatment of critically ill children suffering from various medical conditions. The introduction of these services has reduced the need for families to travel long distances to access specialized care, which was previously a significant barrier for many in Kashmir.
Dedication to Medical Education and Research
Dr. Iqbal’s contributions extend far beyond clinical practice. He is deeply committed to medical education and actively mentors undergraduate and postgraduate students. His approachable nature and passion for teaching have made him a respected figure among students, who look up to him not only for his medical knowledge but for his dedication to patient care.
His research work in pediatric hematology and oncology stands as another testament to his commitment to improving child health outcomes. He has authored several research papers in peer-reviewed medical journals, focusing on the diagnosis, management, and treatment protocols for childhood blood disorders and cancers. His research has contributed to the improvement of treatment guidelines and raised awareness about the need for specialized care in this field, particularly in regions with limited resources.
Recognition and Leadership
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Waseem Iqbal was promoted to the position of Associate Professor at GMC Baramulla. This promotion reflects not only his medical and academic expertise but also his leadership in shaping the future of pediatric healthcare in the region.
Dr. Iqbal has been a driving force behind several workshops and medical seminars aimed at improving pediatric care practices in Kashmir. His work has helped create a network of healthcare professionals who collaborate and share best practices, further enhancing the quality of medical care available in the region.
A Vision for the Future
Dr. Waseem Iqbal’s vision goes beyond just providing healthcare. He believes in building a system where children from every corner of Kashmir have access to specialized, high-quality medical care without facing financial or geographic barriers. His work continues to inspire many young doctors and healthcare workers to serve their communities with dedication.
Today, as an Associate Professor and a leading pediatric hematologist, Dr. Iqbal remains committed to improving child health services, conducting research, and mentoring the next generation of doctors. His journey from a small town in Baramulla to becoming a pioneer in pediatric hemato-oncology stands as an inspiring story of resilience, compassion, and service.
